Our
Story
Elm Ridge Cemetery lies beside Six Mile Run, the brook that crosses Route 27 six miles south of the Raritan River. In 1717, the Six Mile Run Dutch Reformed Church—an offshoot of the Three Mile Run Church, three miles north on Route 27—built its first house of worship at this site.

A cemetery was established on the church grounds around the same time. In 1766, the congregation built a new sanctuary farther south on Route 27 at its present site in Franklin Park, while the cemetery remained beside the original Six Mile Run location. Later registered with the State of New Jersey as Elm Ridge Cemetery, it has served the congregation and surrounding community ever since.

Many cemetery plots remain available. The Board of Managers considers burial-lot requests from longtime area residents and members of Six Mile Run Reformed Church. Fun fact: the Route 27 village was known as Six Mile Run until it was renamed Franklin Park in 1876.

Q: How do I purchase a plot?
A: Six Mile Run Reformed Church serves as the primary point of contact for all cemetery-related inquiries, including interments, plot purchases, monument installations, and general cemetery information. Q: Who digs the graves? Are there grave opening fees? A: ERC does not open graves or charge grave-opening fees. Your funeral director will arrange the opening and bill you for the applicable fees. You are responsible for the cost of this service.

Q: Do I need a grave digger for a cremation burial? A: No. Families or funeral directors may bury cremated remains by hand; a contractor is not required. However, all buried cremains must have a permanent marker.

Q: Is a burial permit required for cremains? A: No. A burial permit is not needed for cremains.
​
Q: Where is my family plot? A: ERC can help locate your family plot, but families are responsible for tracking the use of individual grave sites within it. For assistance, please contact our Church Administrator, Araena Sanchez, or our Building and Grounds Manager, Elder Dee Pollard.

Q: Is there room in my plot for another burial?
A: Plot holders and their families are responsible for knowing the details of their plots and tracking the use of each grave site.

Q: How can I purchase a monument? A: Monument purchases and installations are arranged by the plot holder, family, or funeral director. Regulations regarding the nature of monument stones are included in the deed.
Q: How many monuments are allowed per plot? A: Each plot may have one monument and one or more footstones. Regulations regarding the nature of monument stones are included in the deed.

Q: What decorations are allowed on a plot? A: Permitted decorations include religious symbols, statuary no taller than 12 inches, American flags, and seasonal holiday decorations that comply with cemetery rules.

Q: What decorations are not allowed on a plot? A: Prohibited decorations include solar- or battery-powered lights and decorations; candles, fire pits, or other open flames; wind chimes; metal signs; pinwheels; birdhouses; shrubbery; and plantings other than grass or annual flowers. Artificial flowers are permitted only from November 15 through March 15. Except for plants and American flags, no other items may be placed on graves. Prohibited items will be removed and discarded.
